Senate President Welcomes Return of Wounded Soldiers, Shares Reflections on U.S. Tariff Reduction

Phnom Penh, August 1, 2025 — The President of the Cambodian Senate Techo Hun Sen took to Facebook today to share personal reflections following a high-level meeting with national leaders and military commanders, and to welcome the safe return of two Cambodian soldiers previously captured by Thai forces.

In his post, the Senate President mentioned tuning into a live broadcast by Mr. Sam Vadhana from the United States, which reported on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to reduce tariffs on Cambodian goods from 49% to 19%.

He candidly noted that he briefly fell asleep in a chair—an unguarded moment that was secretly photographed by four individuals—before being awakened by news that two wounded Cambodian soldiers had been handed back to Cambodia by Thai authorities following an eight-hour ceasefire.

“I, along with the Cambodian people, had been anxiously waiting for their return. I wish both soldiers a speedy recovery,” the Senate President wrote.

The return of the two soldiers marks a rare positive development amid heightened tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, following recent border clashes.
